Giovanni Ancorato “TRIO SUTRA”
APERIJAZZ
Giovanni Ancorato: saxophone
Dario Zennaro: guitar
Marc Abrams: double bass
The Sutra Trio was formed with the aim of blending the voice of the saxophone with that of stringed instruments in a jazz-based chamber ensemble.
The musicians have collaborated in the past on various musical projects, though never all three together. Giovanni and Marc can be heard on the CD “Nagual Private Music,” and Giovanni and Dario on the CD “Nagual Sketchbook“.
The Sutra Trio presents a repertoire that alternates original compositions by the saxophonist, drawn from his various CDs, with pieces from different musical traditions such as bossa nova, jazz standards, and pop songs.
Giovanni Ancorato (alias Nagual)
Saxophonist, Composer, Arranger. Born in Venice in 1954.

A self-taught musician, he began playing the guitar at the age of thirteen, soon switching to the electric bass.
With this instrument, he gained experience in pop/rock groups, performing in venues across the Venetian area.
Having fallen in love with jazz around the age of twenty, he transitioned to the saxophone. From that moment, he began working professionally in the music scene in a wide variety of contexts, both in Italy and abroad. In Latin America, where he resided for five years, he played in various salsa orchestras.
He has delved deeply into jazz, Brazilian music, and Indian music through extended stays in those regions.
He has been active as a teacher, contributing to the founding of the Venetian jazz school “Il Suono Improvviso” in 1985.
In 2006, he recorded his first CD of original compositions, “Quintessenze”, in collaboration with guitarist Nicola Cristante. A second CD of original pieces, titled “Private Music“, was released under his name in 2012 by the Roman label Alfa Music.
This was followed by three more CDs under his own name, featuring exclusively original compositions and released by Caligola Records: “Nagual Sketchbook” (2018), “Nagual Italocarioca” (2021), and “Nagual Anna” (2024).
He is active in the Italian and international music scene.
