Venetikorebetiko is a musical journey through the routes of the Mediterranean, which ideally takes us back to the routes of the “Mude da Mar”, traveled since the Middle Ages by Venetian merchants transforming the Mare Nostrum into a crossroads of material goods, cultures, languages ​​and experiences. In a word, of Civilization.

Giovanni Dell’Olivo, composer, singer-songwriter, interpreter of popular music and multi-instrumentalist of chordophone instruments, has been working on musical contamination projects for over twenty years, drawing on the different musical cultures of the Mediterranean.

Rebetika music, not wrongly called “Greek blues”, is extraordinarily rich because it brings together heterogeneous elements of musical contamination, both in musical structures and in lyrics.
Rebetiko is music with a strong Ottoman imprint, from which it takes the essentially modal structure of the melodies, which proceeds through non-tempered scales (or maqam) in place of defined harmonic structures. But within it there is a clearly Sephardic soul, a cultural legacy of a very strong Jewish presence throughout Asia Minor up to Thessaloniki, and also some elements of more Western music, from Neapolitan song to French troubadour music.

In the show Venetikorebetiko, therefore, Giovanni Dell’Olivo and his “rebetes” of the Collettivo di Lagunaria, in telling the musical history of the Mediterranean through anecdotes and examples, will propose an anthology of rebetic pieces by masters of the caliber of Markos Vanvakaris, Vassili Tsitsanis, Papaghika Marika, Rosa Eskenazi, but also music by Cantemir, the great eighteenth-century composer of Moldavian origins who lived in Istanbul.

To counteract this “Middle Eastern” production, the Collettivo will propose a miscellany of the best of its production with a guiding theme linked to the Sea, the Cities of Water, and the relationship between Venice and the cultures of the Mediterranean. This musical tale will include songs taken from some of the most successful song theater shows, as well as songs from the Canzoniere Popolare Veneto.
