Stefano Ottogalli 4tet – COLORS

“COLORS”: an album released by Caligola Records in August 2025.
“Colors” brings together eight original compositions written over the course of several years, drawing from diverse influences—and not just musical ones.
The album opens with the title track “Colors”, built on a flamenco-inspired groove.
The refined jazz waltz “Barlumi” draws inspiration from a poem by Pier Paolo Pasolini; “Sereno”, built on a destabilizing three-bar groove, is inspired by a text by Giuseppe Ungaretti; the delicate ballad “Shakespeare” is inspired by Sonnet No. 8 by the famous English poet and playwright; “My Shadow”, a bebop-style contrafact of Cole Porter’s What Is This Thing Called Love, is inspired by a poem by Robert Louis Stevenson.
Rounding out the record are: “Viaggio”, a modern even-8th jazz tune and the only track performed as a trio without saxophone; “R.I. Blues”, an up-tempo minor blues with a torrential free theme; and “Scrappy”, a driving medium-tempo swing that alternates with a jazz-waltz.
“Released by the Caligola label in the summer of 2025, ‘Colors‘ is nothing less than a palette of musical hues, upon which African-American jazz and the lyricism of European poets combine in pleasing harmony.”
“Italian jazz at its best.”
